EU Launches a New Plan to Reduce Transport Emissions
11 May 2011
large_trafficThe "White Paper 2011", presented by the European Commission at the end of March, is a new ambitious roadmap drafted with the aim to improve mobility and the integration of transport networks whilst, at the same time, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the dependence on imported oil.
Since the last White Paper was published in 2001 new Member States have joined the EU, almost covering the entire continent. The need to create a multimodal mobility and use alternative fuels becomes a major goal if we are to consider that the transport sector continues to rely heavily on oil and is a major source of noise and air pollution.

The Plan, to be realized by 2050, foresees new measures for urban and long distance transport, such as:

• introduction of a ban on oil fuelled cars in cities;
• use of railways and waterways to move 50% of passengers and freight journeys on over 300km distances;
• 40% greenhouse gas emissions reduction from maritime transport;
• aviation to use up to 40% of sustainable fuel;
• interconnection of the European systems for managing information and payments of freight and passengers transport;
• air traffic control integrated management through the Single European Sky initiative for all Member States.

The implementation of these actions could cut greenhouse gas emissions in the whole transport sector by 60%.
