June 5 is World Environment Day
16 May 2011
wed2011_logoPromoted by the United Nations Environment Programme since 1972, World Environment Day (WED) will be celebrated on June 5th. The aim of this event is to promote awareness on environmental protection and bring political attention to this issue.

Though the core of celebrations will be held in India, this year's host country, everyone is called upon to act during this day, as we are all responsible for the protection of our environment; may it be by walking to work instead of using a car, planting a tree or organizing a neighborhood clean up.

WED's theme for this year is "Forests: Nature At Your Service", a choice which also supports this year's UN International Year of Forests. Forests have a vital importance as they represent the lungs of the earth; they provide food, water, shelter, maintain soil fertility and have many other positive effects. Their protection is therefore very important for the future of any living species. Deforestation and degradation need to be addressed and the sustainable use of forests must be encouraged in order to preserve the biodiversity.

For more information on WED's celebration and what you can do to contribute please visit the UNEP's website special at this address.
