The World’s Largest Electric Bus Fleet Running in Shenzhen |
27 May 2011 |
As the host of the 2011 International Universiade Games, the city of Shenzhen decided to strengthen its public transport system with a fleet of 300 electric buses in order to ensure the best welcome for the event's supporters.
The eBUS-12 buses, built by local company BYD, have undergone a series of testing in the cities of Shenzhen and Changsha since January, which resulted in saving approximately 322 kilograms of carbon emissions per day and US$2,833 per month. Buses will be charged over night when electricity rates are off-peak, and will be able to run for 250Km when fully loaded with passengers. Other favorable characteristics include the short charging time needed to reach 50% of total charge, just 30 minutes, and solar panels mounted on the roof to recharge and stock electricity in the battery for air conditioning.
