A Carbon Free Wine
21 July 2011
Salcheto_renderThe Salcheto winery developed a project for producing its Sangiovese wine in a green building, creating the first Italian winery off-the-grid.

Salcheto and the University of Siena carried out a study of the entire cycle of wine process to account for all direct and indirect CO2 emissions. They started off evaluating the CO2 emissions from the raw material, passing through the agricultural production, wine processing and finally, bottling. The result was the first European Carbon Footprint for a bottle of wine: 2.02 kg CO2 equivalent per 750 ml bottle of wine.

The new winery is a green building studied with the aim to create a closed energy system. The building produces its energy needs as a whole thanks to solar photovoltaic cells, geothermal pumps and the conversion of biomass (from pruning wastes).

All these innovations allow Salcheto to have their direct emissions certified negative. Starting from this point, the objectives for the future are to create environmentally friendly packaging alternative to current glass bottles, and to use a tractor fueled by renewable energy.
