“EU-China Urbanisation Partnership” Conference
27 April 2012
EUChinaSustUrbConfUrbanization in China is occurring at unprecedented rate and in 2011 the Chinese urbanization level crossed the highly symbolic 50% threshold. Also in Europe urbanization is a key issue, with approximately 75% of the European population living in urban areas and more than a quarter of the European Union's territory been directly affected by urban land use.

On account of that, EU and China decided in the framework of their cooperation to establish the new "EU-China partnership on Sustainable Urbanisation", which aims to promote exchanges and cooperation in a wide range of sustainable urban development. Within this partnership, signed in February 2012, China and Europe can collaborate to build energy efficient eco-cities by sharing technology and expertise on questions like urban planning, energy supplies, energy demand management and developing "green digital cities".

The launching event of the new partnership will be the first "EU-China Urbanisation Partnership" conference, which will take place in Brussel, on May 3, 2012. During this first meeting, European and Chinese stakeholders will discuss win-win solutions in sustainable city planning and urban infrastructure and mobility.

The conference is organised by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), Friends of Europe, the Committee of the Regions, the European Economic and Social Committee.
