European Mobility Week 2012
20 August 2012
mobilityweek12After celebrating the ten years anniversary in 2011, the European Mobility Week is ready to up the ante and involve even more cities for the eleventh edition.

The importance of this campaign, promoted by the Directorates-General for the Environment and Transport of the European Commission, is underlined by the continuing expansion of actions in non-EU member countries. Last year, cities from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, Japan, Taiwan and the USA registered for the European Mobility Week. By doing this they resolved to organize activities during the Mobility Week and the final "In Town Without My Car!" event, which bans cars from a confined area of the city for a whole day. At the same time they committed themselves to implementing one or more permanent actions with the goal of reducing private car use in favor of more sustainable transport means, such as bike and public transport.

As Rio+20 Conference confirmed that urban mobility problems are a major critical issue for sustainable development, local authorities need to take a step forward to cut transport emissions and ensure a better life quality for the citizens. This is the reason why "Moving in the right direction", focusing on Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning, was chosen as this year's theme.

The European Mobility Week runs, as always, from September 16 to 22. Please check the official website for more information.
