Some Critical Aspects of Combating Desertification in China
09:15 - 10:45 Lecture
China has a long tradition of harmony between human and nature. However, due to the Revolution and the economic pressure, nature became a resource to exploit and to transform at man’s wish, creating unbalance, pollution and exhaus-tion of resources.
The adoption of sustainable development policies, and the concerns for envi-ronmental protection since the 80s, has lead at a certain degree of control of the desertification process. However, the consequences of the excessive exploitation of land and natural resources are still expanding nowadays.
In a globalizing world menaced by climate change, people have become aware of the importance of an eco-balance between human and nature and are eager to make efforts for environmental protection, which could be considered as one of the motto of the 21st Century.
Along with this new and ecological global trend, systems of environmental protection and combating desertification should be also adapted in order to re-spond efficiently to the new and older challenges.
The Vallerani System should be considered as a successful option in the field of combating desertification and implementing the three Conventions of the UN: Climate Change, Biodiversity and Combat Desertification. It provides the advan-tages of low-costs, high efficiency, high-speed, no irrigation, direct seeding and adoption of local biodiversity.
This system should be considered as a valuable option or input to be consid-ered in a wider strategy for environment recovery.
