Waste Recycling: Compost Production - Kyklos Acea Case Study

IMELS, Rome
11:15 - 12:45 Lecture

Abstract
The lecture focuses on biowaste management and relative technical solutions. The lecture consists of the description of the principles about biowaste management, describing biological matrices and recovery solutions. The main subject of the lecture is the description of sustainable biowaste management systems, with great attention to the recovery of organic matter and to the reuse of compost in agriculture.

The lecture is addressed to Public Authorities, Regions, Municipalities and to the main players of the entire waste cycle (producers, holders, facility managers, citizens). Another topic of the lecture is focused on the experiences of Aquaser S.r.l. (Acea subsidiary) on transport and on the recovery and/or disposal of waste, produced by wastewater treatment plants, and on the management of two composting plants, Kyklos and Solemme.

The main objective of the lecture is to point out that the waste chain would not be focalised on a mere process of organic waste treatment, but on the agriculture-oriented production of a standardised high-quality end-product for agricultural use. Aquaser's point of view in the waste management entirely follows the principle of waste hierarchy, traced by European Directive 2008/98/CE.
