Bright Green 2009 – Copenhagen, Denmark. December 12-13
The VIU will be present at the Bright Green Expo being held in Copenhagen on December 12 and 13 as the largest parallel event during the COP15 United Nations Climate Change Conference (December 7-18). Bright Green 2009 aims at emphasising innovation and intelligent technologies as solutions to the global climate challenges.

NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Environmental Security in South-Eastern Europe

The TEN Center of the VIU co-organizes the Advanced Research Workshop on International Regulation Implementation for Environmental Security in South-Eastern Europe (SEE).
The workshop is supported by The NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme and convenes public officials, policy-makers and experts both from NATO and non-NATO Member States, including representatives of international organizations involved in SEE and specialized in implementation of international environmental agreements.

Welcome the Delegation – VIU_CASS Sustainable Urban Development and Eco-Building Training Program

As the problem of urban sprawl is still a hot topic in China, it is not surprising that CASS chose to include this issue also in the seventh year of its cooperation with IMELS and VIU. China is still facing a high rate of urbanization, with people moving from the countryside to the big cities. It is necessary to find new solutions to cope with the many problems thus arousing in the management of urban areas.

A brand new course on 'Environmental Economic Incentives and Policies' has been organised by VIU in cooperation with the Environmental Protection Bureau of the Beijing Municipality. Important Italian experts and institutions are included in the agenda, which covers many different aspects in the field of economic incentives applied to environmental protection, exploring in particular the application of those financial benefits that promote application of energy efficiency principles, renewable energy use, and sustainability in the transport sector.

Welcome the Delegation – VIU_MOST Energy Conservation and Efficiency Training Program

Energy efficiency could be applied to every possible aspect of everyday life, and this is especially true for China, which is constantly increasing its energy consumption due to its urban and industrial growth.
VIU and MOST therefore designed an 'Energy Conservation and Efficiency' training course to deal with this important issue. Among the topics addressed, the new possibilities for obtaining more energy from conventional fuels, for example using cogeneration, or for better exploiting renewable sources, like solar energy, waste, hydrogen and biomass.

The World’s First Osmotic Power Plant to be Opened in Norway
On Tuesday November 24, 2009, Norway inaugurated the world's first osmotic power plant, located in Tofte, outside Oslo.
The plant was designed and developed by Statkraft, a world’s leading company in the development of renewable energies and osmotic power. It is still a prototype with a limited production capacity and is intended primarily for testing and development purposes. The goal is to build a commercial osmotic power plant within a few years’ time.

Greenergy Expo and Enersolar+
Milan, Italy. November 25-28, 2009
Milan hosted two new important events in the field of renewable energy with a focus on producing energy while protecting the Planet: GREENERGY EXPO and ENERSOLAR+, which offered three days of trade fairs and conferences.
Among the topics covered and discussed within GREENERGY EXPO, special attention was paid to geothermal energy and ground source heat pumps, energy from wood and pellets, mini hydroelectric, cogeneration, biogas and the free energy market. Photovoltaic and solar thermal energy have instead been dealt with in the framework of ENERSOLAR+.

European Week for Waste Reduction
November 21-29, 2009
The first European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) was celebrated from November 21 to 29, 2009, in the framework of the environmental LIFE+ Programme of the European Commission.
The objective of the event is to involve, across Europe, all the private and public entities which play an active part in waste prevention. The whole week was dedicated to the concept of waste prevention through awareness-raising actions for a variety of subjects, including municipalities, businesses, associations, administrations, schools.
