February SICP Advanced Training Courses
Coming Up Next at VIU
The activities of the Advanced Training Program on Sustainable Development and Environmental Management will start on February 19, with the arrival of the first Chinese delegation in Italy, selected by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). The 42 trainees will attend a two-week course focused on Waste Management.
The Advanced Training program’s activities in Italy will continue with a delegation, represented by participants selected by the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau from February 26 to March 12. The course will focus on Environmental Monitoring Management

Venice: STOP Non Biodegradable Bags.
On November 23rd Venice Municipality decided to fight against polythene bags: the deliberation draws on the financial law of 2007 which planned an experimental program that was realized to enforce the prohibition of non biodegradable bags that was planned as from January the 1st 2010, but has now been extended until January the 1st 2011.

Renewable Energy: Ernst & Young Report
At the end of 2010 the quarterly basis report “Renewable energy country attractiveness indices”, an index that gives a numerical ranking to 30 global renewable energy markets by scoring renewable energy investment strategies and resource availability, reveals that China has overtaken the US as the most attractive location in which to invest in renewable energy products.

JRC Reference Report: Regulating Air Emission from Ships.
The JRC report describes technological solutions and proposes policy options for reducing carbon emissions and air pollution in this sector and offers an overview for estimating air emissions from shipping. Currently, there are no international regulations for maritime transport emissions, although the International Maritime Organization (IMO) discussed it.

The Fastest Solar Car in the World
The Solar Racer Sunswift IV, better known as IVy, is a solar car which has been designed and built entirely by a group of students of the University of New South Wales, Australia. Using four hundred silicon solar cells, Ivy is able to produce 1200 watt, the same amount of power needed to use a toaster.
